During the warmer months, you may decide to take the family on a camping trip or have a campfire outside. It is important to understand that children are inquisitive and may not realise the danger of fires. Below are some safety tips to consider when near or around campfires with children:
- Children should always be supervised around a fire
- Create a barrier between the fire and the children with objects such as large rocks
- Ensure children wear low- flammable clothing around fires
- A bucket of water or an extinguisher should always be kept close
- Explain to children the fire dangers and how to respond in an emergency situation. For example to Stop, drop and roll if clothes catch alight.
- Always have a first aid kit on hand
- Remember that even after a fire is out, the coals can still be hot
- The MFB recommends putting the fire out with water, not soil, as fires can still smoulder under soil.
In an emergency, remember to dial 000. See the CFA website for further info and safety tips relating to fire safety.
